TO STUDY THE WORKLOAD AND QUALITY CONTROL IN CENTRAL STERILE SUPPLY DEPARTMENT (CSSD) AT A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL
Abstract
Background: Nosocomial infection cause significant health issues and economic loss to the patients as well as the health care facilities. To combat hospital-acquired infections, hospitals need an effective method of disinfection and sterilization which can be taken care of by the Central Sterile Supply Department.
Objective:
- To Study Physical Structure and Organization of CSSD.
- To Study Workload in CSSD.
- To Study the Quality Control Practices in CSSD.
Study Design and Methods; A Prospective study was carried out for six months from 1st January 2019 to 31st June 2019 by direct observational method and study of daily records available in the department.
Results and Conclusions: In the study, it was observed that the physical and organizational structure of central sterile supply services is in consonance with the recommended guidelines. In the study, regarding Workload average cycles on Autoclaves per month is 194 and 18967 items were sterilized. Similarly, averages cycles on Plasma Sterilizer are 81 and 5516 items were sterilized and the utilization coefficient of Autoclaves and plasma sterilizer was found to be 75% and 50%. It was found that in user satisfaction 70% of user-end staff are satisfied with the services provided to them. In microbial count of different items sterilized showed that 89 % samples are sterile whereas 11% samples showed growth.
