Profile and outcome of kidney transplant patients with special reference to waiting time at a tertiary care hospital SKIMS
Abstract
Background: Chronic kidney disease is increasingly recognized as a global public health problem. Transplantation expands access and reduces overall costs for successful treatment of ESRD
Study Design and Settings: Prospective observational study supplemented by retrospective review of records
Objectives: To Study i) physical facilities of kidney transplant unit (ktu) and profile of patients registered for kidney transplants in SKIMS, ii) the waiting time of patients registered for kidney transplant in SKIMS, and iii) the outcome of patients registered for kidney transplant in SKIMS.
Materials and Method: All patients registered for Kidney Transplantation were studied for Waiting time through their complete course. Their Waiting time was studied prior toization Committee approval and post-approval till completion of transplantation. All patients whose kidney transplantation was carried out in SKIMS from Ist January 2018 to 31 December 2018 (period of 1 year) were studied. Patients operated were followed for another six months for the outcome.
Results: Diabetes and hypertension were the most important cause of end-stage kidney disease. The mean waiting time in months was found to be 13.14.3. No significant differences in waiting time were found account on the basis of domicile, gender, marital status, and socioeconomic status. The outcome after kidney transplantation was studied in two groups. It was observed in the retrospective group; the normal functioning graft was present in 73.25% of cases in while as in the prospective group, it was found in 82.85% cases. The mortality rate following transplant was found to be 11.6 % in the retrospective group.
Conclusion: The mean waiting time in months was found to be 13.14.3. The outcome after kidney transplantation was studied in two groups. It was observed in the retrospective group; the normal functioning graft was present in 73.25% of cases in while as in the prospective group, it was found in 82.85% of cases.
